“Nothing can come between us.
Nothing can pull us apart.” —Sade

I am the butt of the joke,
the punchline
you must explain out of earshot
of the bullies in this Type A group -
- the ones who always steal the show,
dull guitar amp posturing, Eddie Van Halen rip-off,
another naked plea for sex, the finale number
crowds in this legs-crossed town go for.

Nobody understands why I finish what I start.
Until they need my help, when the rats
abandon ship, leaving them high and dry,
like in that Sara Bareilles’ hit song. She would, too.
If the world ended today.

I’ve been there, watching the sky destroy itself,
trying to air out this stuffy room.
Technology, they say,
what a bitch.

If I tell you I will. I will
stay up every night
until you have your way.

So stop promising me the moon.
Even I know it’s too far gone.

You are in the bass. I am somewhere in between, waiting for you to recognize me.
